Being gay is a-okay

I'll never understand the bigotry my gay boyfriends must deal with throughout their lives. I'll never know the pain and suffering they have gone through--the anguished, suicidal thoughts or beliefs they were going to hell. For most of them, coming out was a serious, life-changing experience. Some suffered, some did not. Some have physical scars, most have emotional ones. Some had it easier than others.

However, the one thing they all have in common is the desire for their sexual orientation to not define who they are.

When I first met Jesse, we jokingly introduced ourselves as "Jesse, I'm gay" or "Megan, I'm a single mom." Of course, we are both more than those initial labels we received.

This email Andrew Sullivan received is a great commentary about the new gay culture in our society. No longer is being gay taboo or looked down upon. Well, at least, not as much as it used to be. I sometimes joke that everyone is coming out just because it is the popular thing to do these days. (Didn't you get the memo?)

This email, though, could be from any of my boys. It sounds exactly like something Jesse would write.

So, while I'll never know the torture they have been put through--whether it be from themselves, their families, or complete strangers--I know that can help teach future generations that "being gay is a-okay."
