I've been at my job for 4 months now. It is located exactly one block north of Gateway (or as I affectionately call it, Gayway, for reasons I'll explain in a bit) and I have yet to walk over there during lunch and do some lite shopping.
Until today.
I quite enjoy the Gayway. My favorite day to go is Sunday. I have a theory about Sundays here in Utah-ar: the gays are EVERYWHERE because it is the only day they are free of the marmans and other close-minded folk. And I DO mean everywhere.
One of my favorite pastimes is to go and walk around Gayway. Sometimes buying things is involved, sometimes eating is, playing 'Spot the Gay' always is. I often suggest this idea as "something to do" when asked by friends. However, only two have ever enjoyed doing that with me.
There are plenty of gay things at the Gayway. From the cute server/retail boys at the restaurants and shops to the male "fashion" magazines at B&N. Then of course there is Hollister spewing cologne out of the vents onto the sidewalk to lure you inside; if only to look at the tanned and toned clerks who wear flip-flops all year long. (I feel morally obligated NOT to go in--especially after I once almost stole a magazine out of there. I didn't know you had to buy them, I swear!!) Don't forget The Gap, Banana, J. Crew and A&F. How could one forget A&F?! With their eardrum-breaking music and wall coverings of half-naked men, it reminds me of the club on Friday nights. Oh joy.
Anyway, back to my original story. I went to Le Gayway to find some khaki pants.
Of course, I couldn't find any.
Of course, there was a big shoe sale going on.
And of course, I picked 'field trip' day. Hundreds of pint-sized urchins seized the fountain laughing and running around unsupervised. The horror, I know!
But now that it's Spring and since I found a different route other than 400 West to get there, I may just end up going to Gayway a lot more.
If for no other reason than to play 'Spot the Gay' and chuckle to myself.

2 things you gotta say:
Spot the Gay!! That's my favorite game! Yeah, I call it Gayway too and have noticed precisely the same thing about Sundays. Aunt goes to church and I go shopping for gays at the mall. It's most glorious. And it's only going to get better once the Express Men shows up over in the new portion.
Why are gheys obsessed with conspicuous consumption? Why do we buy buy buy? I sometimes think that gay men, as a culture, feel like they have to stay on the cutting edge of fashion so that they can put a psychic distance between themselves and the majority culture.
I think it's a function of shame and homophobia working together.
It's difficult to let someone's negative comments get to you when, clearly, you look better than them.
