Last night I was invited to a pre-July 4th BBQ and firework show. It was the party of the only lesbian couple I know and decided to go only after twisting my friend Josh W.'s arm to go with me. However, this particular lesbian is one of the very few I've met who isn't an angry, vindictive lesbian. She and her partner (of 7 years!) also provide great examples of the spectrum of lesbians. M is your classic lipstick lesbian who loves to dress up. I've never seen her without makeup and we were shocked to see her in tennis shoes when we arrived (she quickly changed out of them). T is the bulldyke. She even wears men's clothing and drinks her beer by punching a hole in the side of the can! (It's funny because most gay men get a new wardrobe when they partner up but this can't necessarily also be the case of lesbians).
Josh and I were hesitant at first to go to the party because the both of us had never been to a party where gay men weren't everywhere scheming on which guy to hit on next. That, and the fact it was located in Taylorsville. (He never leaves downtown either).
It wasn't as weird as we thought it would be, there was a plethora of straight couples and a few gay men every now and then. We occupied ourself by watching the lesbians devour the strawberries and whipped cream on the pie Josh and his beau brought and also listening to Chet (Josh's beau) tell fascinating sex stories about his previous married-to-a-woman life. Oh, and then there was the girl who said she was bi but really she was straight, she just liked making out with her best friend who just happened to be a girl. Yeah, she was really drunk.
I can't say I'll be hanging out with lesbians much anytime soon. (I just don't get it). But, it was a very fun neighborhood 4th of July Firework & BBQ party.
