I'm coming out!

Today is National Coming Out Day. Here in Utah, we celebrated by honoring gay pioneers in our community at an annual breakfast. Oddly enough, this was my very first time at the breakfast and I must say, it was quite fun!

I can't recall the first time I realized my deep affection for the gay community. Never have I felt more at home then within this world. For me, I see no difference between me and my gay friends and their desire to be with the ones they love.

As I remember things, I have been "the One" that many of my gays have been the first to come out to. I marvel at the differences in their stories and lives and how each one's journey is now reflected in my opinion of equal rights for all.

But still, there are some who, while they may be out in some parts of their lives, they are still deep in the closet in other areas. And usually, that other is to their families or parents--the ones, in my opinion, who need to know the most.

I was once told by a gay activist that it is just as important for straight allies to come out as it is for members of the gay community to. I have seen how true this is when I relate to people my passion for this issue and desire for equality for all.

When we talk about rights for all, we mean, ALL.

So, in case you didn't know, here is my "outing."

As a straight, single mom, I am proud to stand up for equality, love and respect for all. I am an ally and I wouldn't want to be in any other place.

2 things you gotta say:

You were one of the first people I told. But really who was I kidding, you already knew. LOL.

I think you were number 4. Maybe this is odd but I can totally name the first few people I told.
